My Nude Year: Day 58 of 365

Tonight we continued with out profile theme. The lighting for this photo is much different however than last nights. The light was placed at a 45-degree angle behind Shannon and was pointed just to her left side. The light was allowed to hit the wall and part of her back making for a nice rim effect you can see on her right arm and upper buttock. Having the light at this angle caused some of the light to bounce off of the wall and back onto Shannon’s face opening up the shadows allowing you to see some details. There is a slight lens flare in the bottom left corner of the photo that was intended. I actually wanted a little more defined flare but Shannon was interested in getting to bed early so I settled for a three-photo set. Two of the photos were lighting test photos so really it ended up being a one-photo set. As long as you get what you are looking for less is better.

Thank you all so much for your support,

My Nude Year: Day 57 of 365

Today was a very long day. I spent the entire day getting my yearly tax paperwork in order and sitting in my accountant’s office. It is always so intense of a time wondering what the end result will be. This is the earliest I have been able to get my taxes done in around a decade. I am so glad it is over until next year but then again it’s a whole year away.

After a long stressful day I wanted a nice peaceful photo. As I have told you all before I love a strong profile image and we setup to capture one with a little different pose. I turned Shannon perpendicular to the wall and put my light source directly in front of her with a very tight funnel of light. I asked her to extend her arms forward while at the same time looking down. I framed the photo in my viewfinder so that her arms and chest would act as a frame within a frame. The technique really draws you eye into the subject of the photo, which is Shannon’s face. I muted the colors in the photo allowing it to be very low contrast but retaining its detail.

I want to thank all of you that have contributed to our kickstarter campaign. We are so very humbled by your generosity.  If you haven’t taken a look at the kickstarter site please go to http://kck.st/1Bgil1f.

See you tomorrow,

My Nude Year: Day 56 of 365

Okay, so tonight went completely unplanned. It a little bit of a long story but I hope you will indulge me. We still had a dozen roses around the house from Valentines Day. Two days ago I told Shannon, “We need to keep those.” I didn’t tell her I had plans to shoot with them once they completely dried out. I wanted to shoot her smelling a rose and as she was it would be half crumbled onto a white bed. I wasn’t sure how we would place the other flowers but we would figure it out as we shot I assumed.

One of our long time friends was coming over for dinner tonight. We have not seen Jacob in a few years since he moved away to Dallas and has stayed so busy with his work. We finally caught up with him online and he said he would love to come over for dinner. The premise of Jake coming over setup tonight’s shoot failure. Shannon, wanting the house to look nice, saw the roses this morning and remembered me saying, “We need to get rid of those.” Since today was trash day she wanted to be nice and put them out for the trash man having heard me wrongly. As we discussed the concept for the shoot I told her my idea and look toward the kitchen sink only to find the flowers missing. She told me she had thrown them away which was a huge shock. After Jake left around 11:30 we started going over ideas. I still wanted to shoot an organic photo and so we setup in a wide corner of our foyer. I used a gridded light place to Shannon’s left side and framed the photo to include the vase above her. Even with the mishap the night was wonderful. We were able to catch up with a very good friend and still had time to capture a strong photo.

My Nude Year: Day 55 of 365

Tonight we started playing with different concepts. Different in what is normally composed and shot by most photographers. The stack of books is positioned to have a slight S-curve in its form. Normally you would put your model into a slight S-curve as it is very pleasing to the viewer’s eye and compliments a women’s shape as well. In contrast to this tonight we put the books in an S-Curve and Shannon’s figure is very straight. I really liked the lens flare near the top book. I could have taken it out in editing but I felt it brought something more to the image.

We launched our Kickstarter campaign today and it is going very well. A very good friend and the man I considered my mentor was the first to support the project. Also a few people from Flickr I have been chatting with for a long time now put money up as well. I am so grateful for everyone’s generosity. I hope things will continue well and the project with be funded before the deadline gets here.

My Nude Year: Day 44 of 365

Both Shannon and I are suffering with allergies right now. It has made it very hard to work this past week. It is only February but the pollen is in the air and making people miserable. Due to Shannon’s eyes being so red from her allergies we decided to try a simple pose that would not require her face to be to the camera. We tried a few different angles and decided we like the feel of this one best.

My Nude Year: Day 43 of 365

I had a very specific concept in mind for tonight’s shoot. Shannon and I got set up and had everything in place to start working. After six shots we took a moment to look at the photos and make sure we liked what we were getting. After taking a few minutes we made a few adjustments and took another shot. We immediately put it on the Mac and decided it really was a poor photo. The idea had been great but we could not pull it off the way we wanted. Sometimes due to reasons out of your control you just need to scratch an idea and move on. I remember having grabbed this spoil a few months back and we started playing around. I think you will agree it turned out to make for a good-looking photo.

My Nude Year: Day 42 of 365

We set up for a photo with a non-traditional pose this evening. I was not completely happy with the results. I had wanted the light on Shannon’s back to be much brighter and more focused. I used a large soft light from above her and another soft light in front of her to fill in the shadows. I should have used a much harder light above her in my opinion. For me this photo missed the mark. One of the nice aspects of a long-term project like, My Nude Year is that it really gives you an opportunity to grow and learn. The photo is not a total lose but not what I was looking for.

My Nude Year: Day 41 of 365

I wanted to create a soft photo tonight that showed off just a part of Shannon. We found a bathing suit cover in the closet that would help us give a sense of softness. We used the cover to partially hid one of her breasts and then with a gentle touch she exposed the opposite breast. When framing the shot I allowed our light source to flare by putting it just out of the frame. I think this adds even more interest to the photo.

My Nude Year: Day 40 of 365

Shannon and I had a big debate over which photo to use tonight. After a good conversation we finally decided on one. Then after having decided we thought it might be fun to ask the readers of my newsletter which photo they liked best. I am waiting to read the responses and for the time being we will just make the post without the final image in place.
